At our meeting last night, the inspiration for the discussion was the nagging feeling that there are many things I wish I'd done differently from the very beginning of my career. I wanted the more experienced writers to share what we'd learned and hopefully pass some of those lessons along to those just starting out.
We started with the details of setting up your own publishing company (assuming you intend to publish independently). Even if your goal is to pursue a legacy publishing deal, there may be a time when you want to publish something on your own. (Those poems or that short story might not fit with traditional publishers. Keep your options open.)
I created a checklist that includes the details of setting up your own press: Independent Publishing - Setting Up the Business. Notes under each checklist item explain in more detail or give helpful hints. Note that none of this advice should be taken without consulting professionals (accountants, or even attorneys) who are familiar with you and your personal situation.
We then talked about the steps that every professional writer should take to build their brand and readership. Details of those tips can be found on this checklist: Setting Yourself Up for Success as a Professional.
The IWOSC OC Satellite is getting into its groove! I hope you'll join us at our next meeting!
